Book Review: The City of Joy (Dominique Lapierre) Can joy come out of a slum's web of miseries? In the real-than-life novel "City of Joy", it does. The story revolves around the interwoven lives of Stephan Kovalski (a Polish Catholic priest), Max Loeb (an American doctor), and Hasari Pal (an Indian rickshaw driver), who found themselves. Deep within one of the poorest sections of Calcutta, Lapierre found that this city, which produced Mother Teresa, had many other selfless inhabitants. LaPierre helped to write O Jerusalem and Is Paris Burning--both great books that are documented by facts. In the City of Joy, LaPierre tells the stories of families and priests and others (haven't finished it yet) and gives a truthful feel for Calcutta with its sadness, its greatness, its smells and feels.
