The Obernewtyn Chronicles is a series of science fiction and fantasy novels by Australian author Isobelle Carmody. The series has a post apocalyptic setting and depicts a world long after its destruction by a global nuclear holocaust. In addition to her young-adult novels, such as the Obernewtyn Chronicles and Alyzon Whitestarr, Isobelle's published works include several middle-grade fantasies. Her still-unfinished Gateway Trilogy Isobelle Carmody began the first novel of her highly acclaimed Obernewtyn Chronicles while she was still in high school. The story follows Elspeth Gordie a misfit who gets sent to Obernewtyn up in the mountains. The book is set in the future after a nuclear holocaust, which they call the Great White and follows Elspeth on her journey for orphan home to Obernewtyn and her story whilst there. It then leads on perfectly to the second in the series - The Farseekers.
